Psalm 94:1-6

God, a God of vengeance? Oh, but “God is love”, we say! He wouldn’t act in vengeance. Yes, God is love, but God is also just, and He, Himself says “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay.”

Justice demands that the innocent be vindicated and that the wicked be punished, much like the blood of Abel that cried out to God from the ground. God is the only One qualified to mete out that judgment.

Isaiah 29:5-7 records God telling us:

““But suddenly, your ruthless enemies will be crushed like the finest of dust. Your many attackers will be driven away like chaff before the wind. Suddenly, in an instant, I, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, will act for you with thunder and earthquake and great noise, with whirlwind and storm and consuming fire. All the nations fighting against Jerusalem will vanish like a dream! Those who are attacking her walls will vanish like a vision in the night.”

God sees everything! Nothing escapes His notice. We just don’t understand why evil is allowed to go to the places it does before it seems that God acts.

Peter explains it this way:

“Most importantly, I want to remind you that in the last days scoffers will come, mocking the truth and following their own desires. They will say, “What happened to the promise that Jesus is coming again? From before the times of our ancestors, everything has remained the same since the world was first created.” They deliberately forget that God made the heavens long ago by the word of his command, and he brought the earth out from the water and surrounded it with water. Then he used the water to destroy the ancient world with a mighty flood. And by the same word, the present heavens and earth have been stored up for fire. They are being kept for the day of judgment, when ungodly people will be destroyed. But you must not forget this one thing, dear friends: A day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is like a day. The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent. But the day of the Lord will come as unexpectedly as a thief. Then the heavens will pass away with a terrible noise, and the very elements themselves will disappear in fire, and the earth and everything on it will be found to deserve judgment. Since everything around us is going to be destroyed like this, what holy and godly lives you should live,”

When Jesus said to pray for our enemies, He wasn’t kidding. He is not willing that any perish but that all would repent. Some are just caught up in foolishness and deceived by satan. We must pray for them that their eyes are opened to the truth.

But notice Peter says that the scoffers are those who ‘deliberately forget’, and the word, ‘suddenly’ in both of these passages implies that when God moves, it will be quick and decisive.

It is unfortunate that when you try and tell people the truth they accuse you of judging them. It’s not that we judge them, it is the word of God that judges them. We are just warning them of the consequences of wicked actions unless they repent, which is God’s desire for all of us.

Repentance is available now…best to take God up on His offer before He acts ‘suddenly’ and the wicked get swept away.
